White Rabbits, and gardener's larceny

Yesterday's walk took me round the neighborhood on sidewalks, everywhere else mud because of rain. Some highway lanes were closed for flooding overnight, even.

So I noticed a little stand of spearmint near a dumpster enclosure, not someone's yard, and a piece jumped into my pocket, a stowaway.

You see where I pinched off a bit of leaf to sniff and confirm its identity before picking a sprig. And the celery in the background pushing up new growth.

How can it be June already? Pride Month. June 14th is also a day of protest and the Pope saying Mass by video link in Chicago, at the White Sox stadium.

Maybe I'll celebrate at the Preserve with pictures as a counter move. I need to do something, still considering. Maybe that's the day to donate to the local food pantry. Summer, when school's out along with lunch programs, can be a hungry time. A good time to help the people T is hurting.

The sun's back today, after yesterday's rain then sun then rain all day.  The patio seedlings are liking it.

Happy day everyone. If you have a countermove to the T parade plans, please share. If I played the tuba I could do a Benny Hill march around the neighborhood. You have to take fun where you can find it or what's the point.

  1. I believe you sent that rain our way, Boud. We had the worst rain in ages yesterday! Torrential!

    1. I wish it would fall into the reservoirs instead of my street.

  2. Yes, Pride is back to being a full-on protest again.

    1. Is there a special emphasis on the 14th?

    2. Not a specific Pride-related emphasis that I've noticed, just a general anti-Trump sentiment for his "special day."

  3. I am weary of rain and cold and wind and mud. Tim and I will be joining protesters on the 14th. That is tRUMP's birthday, and his big beautiful birthday parade. It is also 'No Kings' protest day, with hundreds of nationwide protests and events scheduled. We will protest here as well.

I've never seen Pride as a protest, strangely. My daughter is heavily invested in Pride month celebrations in our town. I don't get it myself. Maybe I should say that I didn't get it. People are people. If we look at who is standing in front of us as a human being with all the rights of being a human being, that should be enough, shouldn't it? I always thought so. But an elderly woman wrote that after attending a pride festival, how overwhelmed she was by one simple thing...that after years with her 'room mate', they had walked along holding hands. In all their years, they'd never held hands in public. That made me tear up.

So. It is important. I learned a new thing.

    1. Yes, the freedom to be visible is huge. Het people often can't grasp how much privilege they take for granted. Thank you for marching! On all fronts.

  4. My celery is at the same stage as yours. I've got mint in a pot near the patio doors. It's supposed to deter flies from coming indoors, but I can't say it's very effective.

    1. I doubt if mint is a deterrent. Tansy has been used for centuries at the door to deter insects. I don't know how effective it is, either.

  5. We are in a hot spell for a few days. Not particularly what I think of June weather, but things have changed. There will be protests but not in this highly MAGA community. I protest in spirit and whatever action I can.

    1. Yes, protest however you can. It's all you can do.

  6. I passed a planter near a restaurant recently that had so many succulents growing in it and the devil told me to pinch a few. Who would know? Who would CARE?
Of course I didn't. But if I came across mint in a place like where you found yours, I would definitely be happy to take a piece to root, to help the plant do what it wants to do which is to spread its wings and grow.
What if they threw a military parade and no one came? Now, that would be something. Like the tree that fell in the forest.

    1. I booked two tickets to the parade and that will be two no shows.
When it comes to something rampant like mint, it would probably get here under its own steam anyway! Vinca suddenly showed up on the patio, competing with the pachysandra!

    2. I often wonder at how certain plants could suddenly appear in my yard.
Birds, in many cases, as you note.

  7. I'm joining a local June 14th NO Kings protest in my city, too. We get good turnouts here. That will be my third protest this year and it's so encouraging to be with people who think the way I think. It's wonderful to see the amazing signs and get positive encouragement from people driving by - honking and waving.

  8. No one is going to object to a little mint theft. That stuff grows like crazy!

    1. On the contrary, most people don't know that and it's not a good look to seem to be picking flowers from a planting! So I steal by, um, stealth!

  9. Your celery is doing well. If the stem of the mint is long enough you can try putting it in a jar of water to see if it will root. Once planted you will have it forever.

    1. That's what I'm doing with the mint. I've started peppermint and spearmint several times and it doesn't thrive on my patio. I know, amazing. I planted some outside my son's building across town and it's taking over. So I've been known to swipe some back now and then. I haven't found out what's overcoming it here. I have more lemon balm than a person needs though.

    1. Now that my walking is back up to speed, I think it would be fun. I also think the neighbors who know me would be all NOW what's she doing?

  12. I will be standing along the same highway I stood in May and June for protests. I am still working on a sign idea. I am assuming it will rain because it rains every time I attend a march or protest. We have been increasing in number and have two boom boxes stationed along the line which is fun. And our organizers have a modern megaphone, - kind of backpack microphone things. I think this will be a biggie.

  15. I'm going to have to attempt the celery growing thing again. Last time it rotted before it did anything. I suspect it could be because our water is awful. Maybe next time I'll use filtered water and see what happens.

    1. Your water may be hard or with natural minerals that celery doesn't like. I think mine is okay. Anyway the celery doesn't object. It has to be organic though.
